William Koenig Obituary

Bill Koenig of Ellicott City, MD, entered eternal rest on May 25, 2023. He was born on June 5, 1940 in Tucson, AZ to Vernon Fredric Koenig and Marion (Bailey) Koenig. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Highland, MD for more than 30 years. 

Bill earned a B.A. in History from Yale in 1962 and an M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies from Yale in 1964. He earned a Ph.D. in History from the School of Oriental and African Studies, Univ. of London, in 1978. From 1964-1971 he worked for the Univ. of Pittsburg as Director of Overseas Programs, and from 1971-1983 he did research and writing. In 1979 his book, Americans at War, was published. From 2018-2020 he was an addiction counselor. 

 At St. Mark’s Church he served three times on the Vestry, 10 years on the Finance Committee, 10 years as an usher, 10 years as co-chair of the Education for Ministry program, 5 years as a Eucharistic visitor, and 1 year on a search committee for a new pastor.

Bill enjoyed reading, researching, writing, family gatherings, the beach, and watching old Westerns and war movies. He is survived by his beloved wife Sharon (Folle) Koenig, his loving son John Phillips Koenig, and his loving sister Enid King. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral will be at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Highland, MD on June 20 at 11 AM, with the burial to follow immediately in St. Mark’s Cemetery.
